What happens during the Sema ceremony?
The ceremony is divided into several parts, each with a specific meaning.
The Opening Music
The ceremony begins with a praise to the Prophet, followed by a solo on the Ney (reed flute), representing the breath of life.
The Sheikh's Greeting
The spiritual leader of the ceremony enters and greets the dervishes, marking the beginning of the ritual with order and respect.
The Entrance
Dervishes enter wearing black cloaks, which they later remove to reveal white dresses — symbolizing spiritual rebirth.
The Four Salams
The dervishes spin through four spiritual stages. These represent the journey of the soul — from awareness of God, to deep love, to unity, and finally to returning to life in service to others.
More than movement
The ceremony is not only about movement. Each stage carries a message about humility, spiritual growth, and human connection.
The Symbolic Clothing
Every part of the dervish costume has meaning. The sikke (tall hat) represents the tombstone of the ego, the tennure (white robe) represents its shroud, and the black hırka (cloak) represents the grave of worldly desires.
The Conclusion
The ceremony ends with a prayer and a reading from the Quran, followed by a silent departure.
